All Inspections

20 August 2013

During a routine inspection

During our visit it was difficult to ascertain views from people who used the service due the nature of their illness. We did observe from peoples body language that they were at ease when staff approached people

We spoke with one visitor who told us they were still getting us to the service as this was the first time her X had been in for a respite break.

We looked at three care records and found they contained enough information to show the care and treatment and support required.

We saw sufficient numbers of staff were on duty. Staff spoken with told us they received training relevant to their role and they felt supported by the manager.

We saw regular monitoring of the records and services provided were in place to protect people who used the service from any risks or unsafe care.

During a routine inspection

For some people staying at home it was difficult for them to express themselves. However we did observe that peoples' facial expressions and their body language appeared at ease when approached by staff.

The people we spoke with told us, 'Its nice here' and 'The staff are nice and kind.'

We were shown the shown the results of the last relatives survey from September 2012. Some of the comments included:

'Firwood House was very good. Everything top class, everything tidy, good food, staff top class. I would recommend it. Everyone keep up the good work'.

'This episode in your care has transformed my mother. She came in hardly able to walk. Within days she was walking with a zimmer with little assistance. She was given a quality of care that anyone would want for a loved one and the family were kept up to date with every aspect of the care package. She said to me whilst in your care, 'I never knew I could be so happy'.

During a routine inspection

When one person was asked about the home and care provided said, 'It's alright, the girls are very nice'. Three people said the food was good and that there was always a choice. Two people said their bedrooms were warm, clean and tidy.

Staff were complementary about the management of the home and viewed the changes that had been made to accommodate respite care for people with a dementia related illness as being a positive move.

Staff appeared to have a good, respectful but friendly relationship with people using the service.

We were told by the local commissioning team there were no concerns at Firwood House and they were very satisfied with the overall standards of care.
