During an inspection looking at part of the service

We followed up on concerns identified during an inspection on 28 September 2013. We spoke with seven members of staff and the registered manager. We did not need to speak with people who use the service during this inspection.

The provider had implemented an action plan they sent us following the last inspection. We found specific concerns we identified had been addressed. Systems for monitoring and managing the safety of the premises were in place.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who use the service because some people had complex needs and they were unable to tell us their experiences. Other people who use the service were able to communicate with us about their experiences. We spoke with the registered manager, the hotel services manager, the chef, four people who use the service, three relatives, three nurses and five care assistants. Our inspection occurred on a Saturday and at the time 67 people lived at Lynwood Care Centre.

People's feedback of the care they received was complimentary. For example, one person we spoke with stated, "I love it here. I love my room. I love everything about it". We also spoke with three relatives who confirmed what people told us.

People were provided with a choice of suitable and nutritious food and drink. We spoke to the cook and viewed the menus which were rotated regularly, depending on the season. We saw four main meals and a selection of puddings were available for lunch and dinner.

People who use the service, staff and visitors were not protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises. Whilst maintenance tasks were completed, some risks identified by the home and others were not adequately addressed.

Appropriate checks were undertaken before staff began work. We looked at five employee files. Staff recruitment records we looked at showed proper procedures had been followed.

People we spoke with were aware of how to make a complaint. None of the four people we spoke with had any complaints. Two relatives we spoke with said they'd never made a complaint, but would feel comfortable doing so and knew how to.

During a routine inspection

During the visit, we spoke with three people who use the service. They told us the staff treated them with respect and kept them involved in the review of their care.

The people we spoke with told us they were happy with the care they received. They told us they were offered plenty of choice and regularly took part in activities that they enjoyed.

The people we spoke with told us that they had no concerns about the care they received. They told us that if they had any concerns or complaints, they would speak to the registered manager. They also told us the staff were kind and helpful and supported them well.

During a routine inspection

We interviewed six residents in some detail during our visit to this home, and spoke with several more when we visited four tables in one of the dining rooms at lunch time. All those we spoke to said staff treated residents well, and responses such as 'Grand' and 'I've always been treated very well' were typical.

The people we spoke with made very positive comments about the home and the care they received. Comments such as 'I can't fault it' and 'You couldn't get a better place' summed up the general feeling from residents.

We were given some positive comments about the therapies and activities including: 'I join everything I can, like physiotherapy, and there are loads of activities.' People mentioned a variety of activities that were available including being taken out shopping, rides in the country, quizzes, crosswords, scrabble, bingo, concerts, hand exercises and manicures, arts and crafts, and going out in the garden.

People told us they felt safe living in this home, and had no complaints. They told us that the home was kept clean and fresh, and that they had access to the special equipment they needed, including physiotherapy equipment in the gym.

We asked people what they thought about the quality of the service at this home and the responses were all positive, ranging from 'Very good' to 'Absolutely marvellous.' Several noted that the home had a good atmosphere and was well run.
