All Inspections

15 August 2013

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we spent one day at the Soma Healthcare office in order to speak with the manager and staff, and review information. We sent out 61 surveys to people who use the service and their representatives. We received 17 completed surveys, which contained the views of 13 people who used the service and the views of the representatives of four other people. The comments were mostly positive, although one person told us the service needed to improve upon it's training programme. One person said, "my care worker really cares" and another person told us, "I am treated with dignity and respect. My care worker is the best one I've had since having a care package." The relative of a person using the service told us, "at the moment the care worker is a good worker, understanding and very caring but only two out of the five we've had have been good."

People told us they felt they were consulted about their care and were provided with information in order to make informed choices. People told us they felt safe with their care workers and there were systems in place to minimise abuse occurring in the service.

People using the service were supported by an appropriate staffing structure. People told us the service acted upon their views and records showed that Soma Healthcare had a range of measures in place to monitor the quality of the service.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with nine people using the service and the relatives of three other people. People using the service and their relatives' made positive comments about the care and support they received from Soma Healthcare. One person told us, 'my care workers are just wonderful. They have been coming to me for years and I would never want to use another agency at all' and a relative said, 'we are pleased with how they look after her. They understand her needs so well and provide such detailed and individualised care.'

People said they understood the care and choices available to them and they were involved in making decisions about the care and support they received.

We saw that people's care needs were assessed and recorded in their care plans. Risk assessments had been carried out and information was updated as required.

We contacted ten care workers and spoke with them about the training and support provided by Soma Healthcare. All of the staff told us they received regular training and supervision, which they found useful.

People using the service and their representatives were asked for their views about their care and they were acted on.

During a routine inspection

The people who we visited gave very complimentary responses when we asked if they feel respected and listened to by the agency and its staff. In one instance we were told by a person who uses the service that they had wanted a different carer and the agency had listened and acted upon that request. Everyone who spoke with us said that they like the carers that they have and find them reliable, but also that they are contacted if a carer needs to change. In most cases people said that in their experience this happened only rarely.

The people who we visited told us that 'I know the staff very well', and 'I have told staff what I need and how I like things to be done and they do that well'. When we asked people about whether they are contacted to talk about their care plans, one person could not recall, one said it had happened the week before and two said they had not been contacted to talk about their care plan for quite some time.

We asked the people who we visited if they felt safe in the hands of their carers and we were told by these people that they always do. We also asked about whether people would know who to contact if they ever had any concerns. In most cases people did know and felt confident to raise concerns if any were to arise. In one instance we were told that the person had no idea who to contact.

The people who we visited gave a highly complimentary view of the work of the vast majority of the carers who support them.
