During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our visit to the home with spoke with eight people who used the service. People told us they were satisfied with the quality of care provided in Monarch Court. They also felt the quality of service has improved over the past few months.

One person told us: "I really like it here. The care is very good and everybody is friendly. I would like to tell you that I have no complaints at all". Another person said: "These girls and boys work hard and will always help me whenever I ask".

People said staff treated them with dignity and respect. They confirmed staff also involved them in the planning of their care.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Whilst we made attempts to speak with people who used the service, some people who spoke with us were unable to comment about the quality of their care, due to their dementia. People who spoke with us seemed to be satisfied with their quality of care. As part of our visit we observed interactions between staff and people who used the service. Whilst there was a good level of engagement between the home's activities coordinator and people who used the service, care staff were observed spending prolonged amounts of time updating various records.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spent time talking to people and observing the care that people received. People were generally pleased with their care and praised the staff, quality of care, and the facilities. Most people told us they were happy living in this home. People were also positive about the food and said there was some choice. We were aware that there were a range of views among relatives about the home but those we spoke to during our visit were positive and were planning to attend the next family meeting and become more involved. We observed some people enjoying group activities on the day we visited but it was clear from talking to others that there was not enough for them to do and some people were feeling quite isolated. A new activities coordinator had been appointed at the home but had not yet consulted individuals about things they would like to do.

7 December 2010

During a routine inspection

We talked to people living in the home and spent at least an hour and a half in each unit observing the care and lifestyle that people experience. We also spoke with some people who use the service, their relatives and some social workers responsible for placing people in the home and monitoring the wellbeing of the people who use services. Overall the feedback was that people are provided with a good standard of care. They seemed to be settled in the home, are given choices and have the opportunity to form good relationships with staff. We observed staff ask those who use the service what their needs and wishes were.
