All Inspections

17 October 2013

During a routine inspection

On the day of our inspection there were 32 people living in the home. We spoke with six people, the registered manager and owner, another manager, the deputy manager and four other members of staff and we looked at the care records of four people.

People told us that they liked living in the home and were encouraged to be as independent as possible. One person said 'I am safe and happy here and the best I can be'.

We saw that staff were kind, friendly and respectful towards the people living there and people were involved in making decisions about their care and in the way the home was run.

The care records we looked at showed that care was planned to meet people's needs and it was delivered as planned.

We looked at the management of medication and found that medicines were recorded and stored accurately and safely and were administered to people on time by trained staff.

We spoke with staff who said they enjoyed their work; they worked well as a team and felt the home provided good care. We were told that they would be happy for their relatives to be cared for at the home. The training and supervision undertaken ensured that staff were sufficiently skilled and knowledgeable to meet people's needs and people told us that they were cared for by capable, well trained staff.

The personal records were accurate, fit for purpose and securely held. Other records seen which were kept to protect people's safety and well being were maintained and stored securely.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a targeted inspection to follow-up on specific concerns that we raised about medication when we last inspected the home on 28th September 2012. We did not seek specific feedback from people who used the service on this occasion.

We found that the home had taken appropriate action to manage medicines safely with the home. The standard of record keeping had significantly improved and staff who administered medication had received additional training in this area. This meant that people were now better protected by the systems in place and the home had taken steps to ensure that people received the right medicines at the right times.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a targeted inspection to follow-up on specific concerns that we raised about medication systems when we last inspected the home on 16th May 2012. Whilst we observed the way people received their lunchtime medication, we did not gain their specific feedback on this occasion.

During a routine inspection

People told us they felt well cared for and that Hilgay was a good place to live. They said that staff had good skills for the job.

One person living in the home told us 'I get up in my own time, go to bed in my own time. The food is good. Very often a nice roast on Sundays with a nice selection of vegetables'.

Another person told us 'people take very good care of me. They arrange for me to see the doctor when I need to'.

It was said to us by one person living in the home that 'staff are very good here. I receive all the help that I need'.

Another person told us 'I like it here. They do take trouble to look after us'.
