During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with four people, one relative, four care workers and the manager of the service.

People's views and experiences are taken into account in the way the service is provided and delivered in relation to their care. People said that staff treat them with respect.

People are generally happy with the service and told us that care workers complete the care and support required. One said, 'It's very good, better than the help I have had before.' Others said, 'It's ok', and, 'They are pretty good.'

Appropriate checks are undertaken before staff begin work and there is an effective system to ensure that staff training is kept up to date. New staff members undergo an induction period before working alone.

Staff receive appropriate professional development. All the staff we spoke with told us that they had received the training necessary to enable them to do their job. One member of staff said, 'It's brilliant, I seem to be training all the time.'

The provider has effective systems to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. We visited six people in their own home as part of this review and spoke with them and/or their relatives about their experiences of the support they have received. We spoke with senior staff at the time of our visit to the office and also spoke with five care workers. We spoke with 12 people over the telephone who received a service from this agency

Everyone felt that they were involved in decisions that were made about their care and that their care was personalised to meet their needs. One person said, 'Some days I can manage to prepare my own food instead of the carer doing it - for me it makes me feel independent and I enjoy doing it'.

Staff were very clear about their responsibilities for reporting any changes in a person's needs to staff in the office. They gave us examples of how some staff had had to make the decision to call 999 but had waited with the person and offered them reassurance.

People told us that they had regular contact with a senior staff member from the office to either review their care or to check that they were happy with the quality of the care they received. One person told us how someone from the office contacted them and undertook 'spot checks' on the staff. This person said, 'Nothing to find fault with '.I couldn't be better looked after'.

All the people we spoke with felt that the care staff understood their care needs. One person said, 'The carer I usually have is really good at looking after me she is well trained and understands how I like things'. One relative said, 'I would have no problem in raising concerns and feel they (the agency) would act on them'.
