7 June 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection of Rivermead Residential Home we spoke with five people currently using the service, one visiting relative and three members of staff about the care and support offered to people.

We observed a welcoming, friendly environment which was undergoing improvements such as new carpets, furniture and redecoration. People we spoke with complimented the changes to the environment and said 'It's much nicer now.'

We saw appropriate procedures in place for the safe administration of medicines which ensured people received their medicines as prescribed by their doctor.

We looked at the recruitment processes for employing staff. These were robust and ensured all staff had the relevant employment checks completed before they commenced work.

There were effective quality assurance systems in place which meant people who used the service benefitted from safe care and treatment.

We were shown around the home by the manager and observed the improvements made to the environment.

We observed staff interacting with people using the service and looked at records for training for staff working at the service.

15 August 2012

During a routine inspection

When we visited Rivermead Residential Home on 15 August 2012 we spent time talking with people and observing the care given to them.

We spoke with six out of the thirty three people currently living at the home.

People we spoke with told us that they liked living at the home and said staff were very kind.

We were told by two people that the food was very good and they had plenty of it. On the day of our visit it was very warm and we saw staff asking people if they would like ice cream or an ice lolly.

We observed one person who was complaining of pain being tended to by staff in a reassuring and sympathetic manner.

2 March 2012

During a routine inspection

During our visit on 02 March 2012 we spent time observing the support provided to people as the majority of people were unable to describe their experiences of care due to communication difficulties associated with dementia.

We observed staff speaking to people with respect and kindness. Staff supported people who were anxious in a calm manner.
