24 July 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Our inspection of 18 June 2013 found that accurate records had not been completed and were not stored securely.

When we revisited Highfield Residential Home on 24 July 2013, we looked at care records for three people currently using the service. We saw that these were detailed and provided staff with appropriate guidance to meet people's needs.

Food and fluid intake charts that we looked at had been fully completed for each person. This meant that the care and treatment people received was delivered in a way that ensured people's safety and accurate records were in place for staff guidance.

We observed that all personal care records had been moved and were stored securely. This meant that the privacy and confidentiality of people using the service was maintained.

18 June 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 18 June 2013 we spoke with five of the 31 people currently using the service, four care staff and the chef who had prepared the days meal. People told us they were very happy living there, and said they felt cared for. One person said, "The girls are lovely and give me all the help I need.'

We observed a welcoming, friendly environment which was undergoing improvements such as new carpets, furniture and redecoration. People we spoke with complimented the changes to the environment and one person said 'When it's finished it's going to look lovely. It will just make everything so much nicer.'

During our inspection we saw evidence that people's nutritional requirements were assessed and managed in line with their needs, and that these were reviewed on a regular basis.

We saw appropriate procedures in place for the safe administration of medicines which ensured people received their medicines as prescribed by their doctor.

Personal documentation was not stored securely and had not always been updated when people's needs had changed.

14 December 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke to five people currently using the service and a visiting relative. People told us they were happy with the care and support they received from staff. They said their privacy and dignity was respected at all times. All people we spoke with told us they were currently happy with the care and support given to them.

Care plans showed that people and their families had been involved when their care plan had been drawn up. This was confirmed in discussions we had with people using the service. We were told that people felt safe having living in the home and if they had any concerns they would contact the manager of the service who was friendly and approachable. One visiting relative said the care in the home was very good and they were confident that their relative was very looked after well.

People felt their views were listened to and their choices were respected. People and visiting relatives confirmed that sufficient staff were on duty and staff were kind and patient.

25 October 2011

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Highfield we spoke with two people in private and a further four sitting in one of the lounges.

One person we spoke with told us, "The carpet at the front entrance was very worn and needed replacing, and if it was their home they would have done it already".

Another person told us "The staff do ask me if my care is ok, and if I want any changes making, most of the time I'm perfectly happy with the support I get".

Two people told us "We joined a book club, and really look forward to getting new books to read".

After speaking to people and staff we spoke with the deputy manager and checked five outcomes that support the care, welfare and safety of people, the environment and obtaining people's views living in the home.
