During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a CQC inspector joined by an Expert by Experience, people who have experience of using services and who can provide that perspective and another CQC inspector to assist.

We also used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. At Kirkdale Care Centre there are a number of people who have dementia or find it difficult to communicate verbally.

We spoke to people using the service. They told us they were treated with dignity and respect. They spoke positively about the activities in the home and said they had a choice about what they got involved with. They said that they got a choice about what they ate and that cultural foods were available. People told us that they felt safe using the service, would be happy to raise any concerns that they had, and that they had been involved in drawing up their care plans.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with a range of people who live at the home and with some relatives who were visiting. People we spoke to said they knew there was a care plan for them, and that we could examine it if we needed to as part of the inspection.

They said that they had been asked about their care needs when they were moving into the home, and that they knew they had a care plan showing staff what help they needed. They said that they were regularly asked about their care needs when their plan was being reviewed. One relative emphasised that the homes manager was very good at ringing her when her aunt had any problems and that she was surprised at the range of activities offered. A number of relatives said they were confident in the home's management, and that they felt their relatives were safe and well cared for. They said they could visit the home at any time, day or night and were welcomed by staff.

All of the people who live at the home, that we spoke with, said that the staff were friendly, helpful and respectful. They also said that the food was good and that they were given choices each day for each meal. They told us that the staff knew how to support them, and that they could speak with the manager if they were worried about anything.

Overall, the feedback we received from people who lived at the home was very complimentary about the way staff respected their rights, and encouraged them to get involved in the running of their home. Relatives said that the staff at the home had got to know their relative well.

People who lived at the home expressed full confidence in the home's current management. They said they could speak with the manager at any time regarding any concerns.
