All Inspections

5 February 2014

During a routine inspection

Eleven people were living at Alston Court during our inspection. During this inspection we observed engagement and interaction between support workers and people who live at the home. We saw that support workers were kind and considerate in their approach to each person and were sensitive to the needs of people.

We found that people's consent had been obtained for care and treatment provided to them by the service. Records showed that people had regular opportunities to be involved in and discuss how they wished to have their care provided.

People's health and social care needs had been assessed and care was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. People had access to community and specialist health services.

People had been protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

People were cared for by suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection we observed that people were involved in different activities, for example, one person was being supported to cook, another person was listening to music and dancing, two other people were taking part in arts and craft activities. People told us that their choices were respected by staff.

Records showed that care reviews took place on a three monthly basis. People we spoke with told us that they were involved in their reviews. One person said "They speak to me sometimes about my support, they ask me how I am and if I am happy here. They write things down."

Appropriate safeguarding procedures were in place providing information about how to recognise abuse, how to report abuse and where abuse must be reported.

Appropriate checks were undertaken before staff began work. We looked at four staff records and saw that care staff were subject to Criminal Records Bureau check. We saw that suitable references had been obtained for each of the staff whose records we viewed.

People were made aware of the complaints system. This was provided in a format that met their needs. We spoke with all five people who told us that they were happy with the care they received. They said that they would speak to a member of staff if they wanted to complain. One person said "I don't want to complain about anything because they are really good. If I did want to complain I would speak to a member of staff or I would speak to my family"
