During a routine inspection

People's care and treatment was assessed, planned and delivered in line with their individual needs. One person who used the service told us 'I receive a high standard of care here' another said. 'the doctor has been very available and thoroughly explains everything'. We spoke with four people who used the service and we looked at four records of treatments which included detailed assessments and treatment plans. Records included peoples' medical and fertility histories.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. On the day of our inspection treatment areas were clean. However some rooms were cluttered with equipment. Staff explained infection control processes and told us they carried out regular audits.

People described staff as 'professional' and 'knowledgeable'. One person said 'they reassure you'. Staff were able to explain fertility treatments in depth. Staff told us they felt valued and supported. One staff member told us 'everyone is very approachable'.

People had their comments and complaints listened to and acted on. Any feedback from complaints was used to inform staff of how improvements could be made to the service. Staff said they tried to resolve complaints as soon as they were made aware of them. Most people who used the service told us they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to.

During a routine inspection

One person who used the service told us staff at the clinic were "helpful and very knowledgeable". We saw six records of treatment which demonstrated that consent was sought and understanding was checked before and during treatment. We saw information given to people who used the service about treatment options and risks which ensured that informed choices were made. We carried out a visual tour of the premises and saw the service was provided in an environment which was clean, tidy and hygienic. We checked audits were undertaken to ensure consistent cleanliness and infection control was maintained.

One member of staff told us, referring to staffing and support levels 'whatever we've asked for we've got'. We saw that the provider has thorough auditing procedures in place to ensure that the quality of the service is checked and improved consistently. People who used the service regularly have opportunities to provide feedback about the quality of service they receive. There was a robust complaints procedure in place and we saw complaints which had been dealt with appropriately and had led to organisational learning and improvements.

This service is licensed by the Human Fertility and Embryology Agency (HFEA) and was last inspected by them during October 2012 the result of which is available on their website.
