During an inspection in response to concerns

People with whom we spoke told us that they felt staff were excellent and responded to their needs the best they can, but there were not enough staff to see everyone when they needed support or help. One person said: 'There are not enough staff, but they are excellent. I think another person would really make a difference.' When asked about their care, one person told us, 'Sometimes it is good, sometimes it is not.'

Two people approached us as we observed what was happening and asked us, 'Which way do I go to my room?', while the other asked, 'Where is the lounge?' and walked away without getting the directions, which were the opposite way.

One person was crying in the dining room, while a staff member was reassuring three people at the other table. At the same time one person came to us saying, 'I don't know where I am, who I am, or where I am going. I was just sitting there waiting for my bed time'. From the other end of a long corridor another person was shouting, 'Where is everybody? Where is everybody? Where are they? I can't find them.'

Two people, less affected by dementia, told us that food was fine and that they had a choice. They explained that staff prevented conflicts between some 'confused' people and that they felt safe in the home.

During a routine inspection

People with whom we spoke told us that they felt that their needs were appropriately assessed and met. They told us that Woodstock was, 'A nice place to live in. Staff are good and they know what they need to do.'

People commented on care, their feeling of safety, on the opportunity to make a choice and all of them praised staff for responding very well when people called them.

We noted that staff interacted well with people. They respected their dignity, were patient with them and created an atmosphere where people felt comfortable and relaxed.

People also felt that they live in a clean and homely environment. They were happy with the food and choices that they could make.
