During an inspection in response to concerns

One person told us that 'it's perfect here. Pretty good staff and accommodation. I would like to go out. There is nothing to do here'. The provider later told us that the person concerned goes out regularly.

A second person stated that she was 'comfortable. Staff don't do anything. I don't go out'.

A third person told us that the home is 'alright' and conveniently located for her family to visit. She stated that she has a kettle in her room so that she can make hot drinks for herself when she likes. She reported that a member of staff had asked if she would like to play bingo on the day of our visit but that she had been waiting over 20 minutes for the member of staff to return and for the game to start. Eventually another member of staff started a game with two people who use the service.

We noted that two members of staff took a person who uses the service out for lunch when we visited on 16 August 2011.

When asked about the meals, people's comments included the following:

'I enjoy my breakfast';

'Sometimes get a drink and you get one at lunchtime';

'I like my food here';

'Lunch is horrible'.

One person told us that he did not always feel safe at the home. He stated that he 'got clocked in the eye' by another person who uses the service.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People who use the service stated that they are generally happy with the care they receive. They reported that they feel safe at the home. Comments included the following:

'It's a very good care home. My needs are met fully';

'It's a nice place. I like the staff. They're very friendly';

'I receive excellent care. The staff are kind. I live happily'.

People stated that there are enough staff on duty during the day to meet their needs. They reported that there is sometimes only one member of qualified staff on duty at night, which can result in delays getting medication and going to bed. Two people raised issues about communication between staff and between staff & people who use the service.

We were not able to obtain the views of people living on the ground floor, the majority of whom have dementia.
