During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who used the service. Although, they were limited in their ability to verbally communicate with us, they were able to demonstrate their understanding of what they were being asked and make their wishes known. They confirmed staff sought their consent before they delivered any care. They agreed they were very happy with the level of care provided and staff understood their needs. One of the people we spoke with told us 'I have been bowling'. They said they were 'happy here' and staff 'look after me'. A relative said 'it is a very good, excellent home. I couldn't fault it'. We looked at four care plans and saw they were individualised and included the necessary information to inform staff as to the specific care people required. We saw these were reviewed and updated every six months. We observed care in the communal areas of the home and saw staff interacting with people in a positive way.

We found the home was clean and appropriately maintained. The manager told us the provider had agreed a refurbishment schedule for those areas of the home which required updating. We saw there was a current infection control policy and the manager said they were the infection control lead. We spoke with two members of staff and the manager, all of whom confirmed they had received infection control training. Everyone we spoke with told us the home was always clean. One person said they helped to 'keep [their] room clean'.

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. We spoke with a care manager who told us they did not have any concerns regarding the care provided by the home.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods such as reviewing records, we talked to staff, people that used the service and the manager to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, This helped us to review the care and treatment as people using the service had complex needs and limited communication.

People's views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care We observed that staff asked people about how and when they wanted their care and support. Staff were able to effectively communicate with people due to understanding their communication needs and working in line with care plans and communication guidelines.

People living at the service told us that they were happy in their home and that staff listened to them, because of peoples limited communication we had to ask direct questions to get a response from people.

Records that we looked and staff that we spoke to confirmed that people experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. Care plans were personalised and detailed people's individual needs, preferences and how they communicated. Risk assessments were in place and reviewed regularly.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet peoples needs. We observed staff spending the majority of their time with people who used the service. Staff checked on people throughout the day.

People were able to tell us about their experiences and we also spoke with relatives and health professionals. We spent time in the home's communal areas observing people and staff. Interactions were warm and friendly with staff clearly having a good knowledge about the people they were caring for.

People told us that staff were friendly and that they had the same staff caring for them. People confirmed that they had a choice about meals. One person told us that they had chosen not to have a full meal but to have a sandwich on the evening we visited. People also said that they could choose what they did and what time they got up or went to bed.

People told us they liked living at Woodville which they clearly regarded as their home. Most people have lived there for a number of years. People told us who their key workers were and were positive about how their key workers helped them. People said staff were available to take them out in evenings and weekends.

People said that they had no concerns about how their personal care needs were met. People said that if they were unwell then staff would contact doctors for them. People said staff were available when they needed them and knew what care they required.

People told us that lots of activities were provided including outings to various places chosen by them. People told us about a holiday some of them were looking forward to in the next few months. They also told us about previous holidays they had enjoyed.

We also spoke with other professionals involved in the care of people. They stated that they had no concerns about how people's health and care needs were met.
