During a routine inspection

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in such a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. We looked at four care plans for people who used the service. These were personalised and provided detailed guidance about how people's needs should be met.

We looked at the menus and saw they offered a wide range of hot and cold meals. We saw there were two choices available at lunchtime and two in the evening. A hot meal was available at lunch and tea time. A cooked breakfast was available up to four times a week. One person who lived at home told us, 'I like the food, it's always on time. The puddings are gorgeous.'

We looked around the home and observed a good overall standard of cleanliness. We saw people's rooms were clean and communal areas were clean and tidy. The home was free from mal odour. One person who lived at the home told us, 'It's very clean, spotless in fact. They hoover and clean my room every day.'

Staff received appropriate professional development. There was a training and development programme and a system for monitoring staff attendance on courses. The care staff we spoke with confirmed they received training that was relevant to their work and helped them to meet the needs of people who used the service. One member of staff said, 'This is a good place to work, communication is good and we feel well supported.'

Throughout the SOFI we saw staff treated people with respect and courtesy. The atmosphere in the home was relaxed and during our observation we saw frequent positive and friendly interaction between staff and people who used the service. We saw staff took their time to understand people where they had communication difficulties. We noted people responded positively to touch and smile.

We were able to speak with five people who used the service. People told us they felt respected and were involved in making everyday decisions. They also told us they liked living there and commented, "I make my own routines' and "I can do what I want and I when I want to."

People told us they were well looked after and their needs were met. People said, "I like living here" and staff were, "Very good, very kind. They take trouble to do things and have lots of patience."

People who used the service also told us how they made decisions about where they wanted to spend their time and what activities they chose to participate in. Three people we spoke with told us about the recent holiday to Blackpool they had enjoyed. Visiting the illuminations and staying at the hotel were some of their favourite memories.

We spoke with two relatives who told us they were very satisfied with the care offered and commented, "It's absolutely fantastic, I couldn't ask for better' and "The staff are always helpful and quick to respond to care needs."

People told us they could choose what clothes they were going to wear and what they wanted to do for the day. One person told us they had a family member also living at the home and they could go out into the town centre like they used to before they moved to the home.

People told us they liked living in the home, it had a home from home atmosphere and the food was good. People said, 'The staff treat us with dignity and respect at all times.' We were told staff always attend to peoples needs promptly when called. One person said, 'I can not fault the home.'

We were told the trust has a wishing programme. People put wishes forward in the hope they will be granted, it is called a wishing tree. People put forward their wish request in the hope it maybe chosen. One person had a wish granted because they wished to play cricket. They were given a photo of the day and a certificate to remember the occasion.

We were told people are encouraged to attend activities outside the home as well as the activities organised by the homes activities coordinator. People can put forward ideas about what they would like to do. Where possible, arrangements are made for the ideas to be carried out for example one person told us they liked horse riding.

People felt they were listened to and could raise issues they may have to any of the staff in the home. People told us they felt safe.
