During a routine inspection

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. There was information in care records about people's health and care needs. Risks to their welfare were documented. Care workers said that they found that the information was clear and said that communication between staff was good within the home.

We spoke with two care workers who demonstrated a good understanding of the types of abuse that people might experience and the actions they should take. The care workers we spoke with told us if they needed to raise concerns they would take these directly to the manager or person in charge. They told us they would also record all concerns.

We saw that Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks had been completed. There were two references for each employee, together with proof of identity and right to work in the UK.

Valley Road had systems to monitor the quality and assurance and this was conducted by the provider. We saw the most recent quality assurance audit that had been undertaken in May 2013. This covered for example, health and safety and medication policies.

During a routine inspection

During the visit we spoke with two people who use the service. Both told us that staff treated them well and said they were supported by staff to make decisions about their lives. People said they received the care and support that they needed, in the way that they wanted it to be provided. One person said he was involved in the reviews of his support plan and was asked his views by staff.

During the visit we observed staff providing support to people in a sensitive way that maintained their privacy and dignity. Staff were friendly and respectful in their conversations with people. Staff took the time to respond to requests for assistance and to answer questions.

During a routine inspection

Only three people were in the home on the day we visited. Two of these people were able to verbally communicate and one person used sign language and expressed themselves non-verbally. People expressed they were happy with the care they receive. They let us see in their rooms and told us they were able to keep and furnish their rooms how they wished. People told us they liked the meals in the home and that they liked the staff.
