Our view of the service

Highfield Care Home is a residential care home providing accommodation with nursing and/or personal care to people. This was the first assessment carried out under our single assessment framework. This assessment was unannounced. Assessment activity stated on 22 February 2024 and ended on 14 March 2024. We visited the service on 22 February 2024 and 29 February 2024. We looked at 8 quality statements which included safeguarding, safe environment, involving people to manage risk, safe and effective staffing, medicine optimization, supporting people to live healthier lives, governance management and sustainability along with learning, improvement and innovation. People felt they received safe care and support, which was provided by staff who were skilled and met their needs. Staff were aware of safeguarding processes and felt that, where improvements to people’s health, safety and wellbeing were identified, these were actioned immediately. This meant risks were reduced in a timely manner. People and relatives feedback, along with our observations showed that there was a focus on achieving good outcomes for people’s health and wellbeing. People received support with their medicines in a way that met their individual needs and preferences. Care plans and risk assessments sometimes lacked the necessary detail to support staff with managing specific healthcare needs. Some medicines with known additional risks had not been appropriately risk assessed or recorded at the time of the assessment. Following our visits, the registered manager started to respond to the concerns raised and make the required improvements. People, relatives and staff felt the service was well managed and the management team were approachable. There were robust systems and processes in place to monitor all aspects of the service, with procedures in place to learn lessons when needed and take action to address any concerns identified through the wide range of checks and audits in place.
