People were encouraged to remain as independent as possible, and to express their views and preferences about their care and support. Staff knew people well and treated them with kindness and compassion. A positive approach was taken to risks, and people's backgrounds, life histories, interests and preferences were considered when planning activities and events.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

We saw staff treated people with kindness and respect when we visited the service. Staff knocked on people’s doors before entering, and asked people before assisting them. Throughout our assessment, families and visitors provided consistently positive feedback about the staff. One visitor said, “Very kind and caring, I have never had any worries,” and “always a happy staff group." It was clear from our observations people were very happy and comfortable in the company of the staff team, and staff knew people well.

Independence, choice and control

We reviewed people’s care records and risk assessments, which included detailed information about people’s interests, backgrounds and life histories. The risk assessments were personalised and included a positive approach to reducing risks whilst retaining the person’s skills and independence where possible.

Staff said they knew people well, and had access to detailed information about their likes and preferences. They told us how they provided people with choices and asked them how they liked things done. One said, “I listen to the wishes of residents, I am very happy. I get good feedback from residents and their families.”

People told us they felt encouraged by staff to remain as independent as possible. One said, “They are really good at motivating me, they encourage me to do as much as I can safely.” Another told us how important it is that they have choice and can express their preferences, “They always ensure I have choices - nothing is presumed.” Another agreed, saying, “I feel like my views are important to staff and they give me so much support when I need it, but also gentle encouragement.”
