Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they could do things for themselves and their independence and choice was promoted. One person told us about how they made sandwiches for themselves and other people using the service. People told us they were able to receive visitors at the home and to make visits to their own family. We saw from surveys that people felt included and informed about decisions made at the service. A person wrote in the survey, “Yes, I feel informed with decisions.” Residents meetings gave people opportunities for making choices. For example, they included discussions about menus and activities. People were involved in developing their care plans which helped ensure they were given choice and control about the care they received.

Staff were aware of the importance of promoting people’s independence, choice and control and were able to give examples of how they did this. For example, supporting people to access the community where they had previously found this difficult to do and helping develop independent living skills for people such as cooking. A staff member told us, "I give [people] praise as they go along. Some of them need the encouragement. I will motivate them."
