We carry out reviews and specific inspection programmes that focus on particular themes or aspects of health and social care – including pathways of care, groups of people or services.

What do we do when we carry out a review?

When we carry out a review, we:

  • Agree what we want to find out and describe how our work will help support improvements in care.
  • Listen to the experiences of people, their families and carers.
  • Collect and review data about the theme we are reviewing.
  • Carry out inspections to observe care where appropriate.
  • Speak to staff who provide care and also, for some reviews, commissioners of care.
  • Analyse the evidence we collect.
  • Publish a report of our findings and make recommendations.
  • Evaluate the impact of the review.
