Children and young people's survey 2016
Read the results of our latest survey, which looks at the experiences of children, young people and their parents and carers attending hospital for treatment as an inpatient or day case.
Eligibility and participation
- Number of participants: 34,708
- Response rate: 26%
- Age range: Children and young people under the age of 16
- Time period: November and December 2016
- Eligibility: Children and young people up to the age of 15 who were admitted to hospital as an inpatient, or as a day case patient.
- Exclusions: Babies where the mother was the primary patient or babies who were only admitted to a Special Care Baby Unit or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Patients treated for psychiatric conditions and private patients (non NHS).
Key findings for England
Overall children and young people’s experiences of inpatient and day case care were mostly positive. The majority of children and young people said they were well looked after while in hospital, staff were friendly and that they received answers to their questions. Most parents and carers reported positive experiences for how their child’s pain was managed and for receiving enough information about new medication.
The survey results suggest there is scope for improvement in a number of areas, including:
- Children and young people having enough things to do whilst in hospital
- Involving children and young people in decision making
- Being treated on age appropriate wards
Our young experts by experience have made a short video, presenting the results of questions asked to those aged 8-15 in a child friendly format.

Results for NHS trusts
These results show how trusts performed on individual questions in the survey. The technique used to analyse these results allows us to identify which trusts we can confidently say performed 'better', 'worse' or 'about the same' when compared with other trusts.
Each trust was also provided with a benchmark report which provides more detail about the data. You can view these reports on the NHS surveys website.

How will the results be used?
CQC will use the results from the survey in the regulation, monitoring and inspection of NHS acute trusts in England. Survey data will be used within CQC Insight, which provides Inspectors with an assessment of how trusts are performing. Survey data will also form a key source of evidence to support the judgements and inspection ratings published for trusts.
The organisations below will use the results in the following ways.
Trusts, and commissioners, are expected to take action to improve services based on the results.
NHS Improvement will use the results of the survey to inform quality and governance activities as part of its Oversight Model for NHS Trusts.
