More information sharing needed over controlled drugs

Published: 19 August 2014 Page last updated: 3 November 2022

We have today published our annual report on the management of controlled drugs, which highlights the need for an increase in the sharing of information.

Our report – the seventh of its kind – shows safe arrangements for controlled drugs were maintained despite changes in the law and the structure of the NHS.

Prof Steve Field, Chief Inspector of General Practice, said: “Significant progress has been made in order to improve the management of controlled drugs since the Shipman inquiry ten years ago.

“However, more needs to be done in terms of improving systems that can enable secure gathering, sharing and recording of intelligence about controlled drugs concerns.”
