A further 19 NHS trusts will be inspected from January 2014 using larger, expert teams that include professional and clinical staff and members of the public who use care.
These NHS trusts are the first to be given one of the following ratings.

How have we chosen these trusts?
We have selected the next 19 NHS trusts to inspect based on whether they:
- score highly in our intelligent monitoring tool.
- are a foundation trust applicant that Monitor have asked us to look at.
- were inspected by Sir Bruce Keogh.
We have also selected eight mental health trusts and community health services to help us test and develop our models for the way we inspect and regulate those services.

What is our intelligent monitoring?
Intelligent monitoring looks at 150 different indicators covering a range of information including patient and staff experience and statistical measures of performance.
These indicators give our inspectors a clear picture of the areas of care that need to be looked at in NHS acute trusts.
Together with local information from partners and the public, this monitoring helps us to decide when, where and what to inspect.
It will also help us identify and respond more quickly to hospitals where there is a risk that people might not be receiving safe, effective, high quality care.
CQC’s Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards said: “As a doctor, I liken intelligent monitoring to a screening test; our inspection combined with intelligent monitoring provides the diagnosis, following which we make a judgement, which will in turn lead to action.”
