Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust must improve the way it follows up test results and learns from serious incidents.

The demand for improvement follows an unannounced visit to the trust in September. Our inspectors found a lack of evidence to show that Basildon and Thurrock had effective systems in place to identify, investigate and review incidents which harmed or could have harmed patients.

The trust must:

  • consistently follow up all early detections of ill health
  • implement a more robust incident reporting procedure

We gave Basildon and Thurrock 28 days to set out actions that will ensure it complies with our essential standards of quality and safety.

We will continue to monitor the trust’s performance against our standards.
