The Care Quality Commission has rated the care being provided at Dolphin Lane in Wakefield, to be Outstanding after an inspection in August this year.

The service provides accommodation for persons who require personal care for up to 15 people, at the time of the inspection the service was at full capacity. The service specialises in caring for people with a learning disability or autism spectrum disorder.

Dolphin Lane was rated Outstanding overall and for responsive and well-led services, and Good for safe, effective and caring services.

A full report of the inspection has been published on the CQC website: www.cqc.org.uk/location/1-130890642

Debbie Westhead – Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care said:

“It’s great to see the service has continued to provide Outstanding care in helping people enjoy being active both mentally and physically. But they also demonstrate that enjoyment from learning and doing new things does not have to be diminished by being in a vulnerable situation, when the right support is available.

“Whilst we previously found the management to be Good, we found there had been significant improvements in this area of the home. To drive improvements in the service the leadership used a similar method to our own inspections, which showed a desire self-learning and commitment to push their care standards higher. The people and staff we spoke to all gave positive feedback about the manager.

“There was a real desire, and success, to work with partner agencies in the community to share experiences, helping people reintegrate with the community and making sure people’s voices were heard about their safely, going forward.

“We also saw how the service was building on their current performance and planning for future developments to further support people transitioning back into the community. It’s a wonderful example of supporting people to live full, enjoyable lives and developing further support. Everyone at the home should be very proud.”

Previously in 2016 at the service’s first rated inspection, it achieved an Outstanding rating for responsive services. Inspectors found staff that supported people to achieve their goals and opened them to a variety of positive activities and experiences. At the latest inspection inspectors found the home had continued to support people in this manner, enabling people to enjoy their favourite activities or safely engage in something new.

People using the service often felt unsafe in the community because the needs of people with a learning disability were not always respected or taken into consideration. Inspectors found the that registered manager had formed important links with local community organisations with the aim that a joined-up approach would further support people using the home to re-join the community safely.
