Sidmouth Nursing Home in Winsdale Road, Sidmouth, Devon has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in October.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being caring and well-led and Good for being safe, effective and responsive to people’s needs.

Sidmouth Nursing Home is a care home which provides accommodation for up to 29 people living with dementia or other mental health and complex physical needs. There were 27 people using the service at the time of the inspection.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“The staff and management of Sidmouth Nursing Home have demonstrated their commitment to providing exceptional, high quality, person-centred care and it is clear that people’s well-being and happiness is at the very heart of its operation."

“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in September 2015 and I am delighted that the standard of care provided has continued to improve and has now achieved our highest overall rating of Outstanding. The staff and management should be proud of this achievement”

Some of the key findings from the inspection included:

  • Staff were exceptionally caring and people consistently told inspectors they were well cared for and felt valued. Relatives and professionals spoke very highly about the quality of care provided and expressed complete confidence in the management team and staff.
  • People received care and support that was based on their individual needs and preferences. Personal care records included people's individual plans of care, life history, likes and dislikes and preferred activities.
  • The service had an inclusive ethos, which focused on the individual person rather than their diagnosis or condition. Where necessary communication aids were used to help ensure people were involved in making decisions about their daily care and support.

People were supported to be independent and had choices about their care. For example, people had the necessary equipment to aid their mobility and were encouraged by staff to use the equipment and also actively involved in making decisions about how they spent their day, including what they wore and ate and participating in activities they wanted to do.
