The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by Charnwood Country Residence in Much Dewchurch, King’s Thorn, Herefordshire, to be Outstanding overall following an inspection carried out in June.

Charnwood Country Residence provides accommodation and personal care for up to 27 people.

Inspectors found staff were caring and compassionate and people were being provided with safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led care. A full report of the inspection has been published on CQC’s website: www.cqc.org.uk/location/1-121568293

Under CQC’s new programme of inspections, all adult social care services are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Charnwood Country Residence was rated Outstanding overall, Outstanding for being responsive and well-led and Good for being safe and effective and caring.

Deb Holland, CQC’s Head of Inspection for Adult Social Care in the central region said:

“We were impressed with what we found during our inspection of Charnwood Country Residence and inspectors were struck by how caring staff were to those using the service.

“The service provided excellent and innovative person centred care that maintained people's health and wellbeing. Staff supported people to maintain interests and hobbies, promoting people's abilities and skills.

“The provider had been working closely with one of the leading universities that were researching better care and support to people who were living with dementia. As a result of this a number of innovative adaptations had been made to the environment inside the home.

“For example specifically designed furniture had been implemented in people's bedrooms. This allowed people to choose what they wanted to wear and then staff could place the clothes in a wardrobe that had an open design so the person could immediately locate what had been chosen for the following morning.

“One person we spoke with told us that this gave them independence regarding getting dressed in the morning as they did not have to rely upon staff to locate their clothing items.

“People and staff felt that the manager and the provider were approachable and supportive. People said they could talk to the manager at any time and they would be listened to.

“All of this meant people received a high standard of care, which is why it has been rated Outstanding.”

Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said:

“The quality of care which our inspectors found here was exceptional and I am very pleased that we can celebrate the service’s achievements.

“An outstanding service is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and commitment. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved.”

Karen Rogers, Proprietor of Herefordshire Care Homes who own Charnwood Country Residence, said:

"The staff at Charnwood constantly strive to provide the very best care and lifestyle for all our residents. Outstanding is what we aim for and we are continually improving, so it is fantastic to be Herefordshire's first Care Quality Commission Outstanding home. We treat all our residents as individuals and having hobbies or independence is a way of life at Charnwood."
