CQC rate Wilmslow Road Surgery, Manchester as Inadequate

England’s Chief Inspector of General Practice has placed a Manchester GP practice - Wilmslow Road Surgery - into special measures following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission in April.

The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care at the Wilmslow Road Surgery, to be Inadequate. A full report of the inspection can be found on our website.

Inspectors rated the practice inadequate for safety and well led and requires improvement for effectiveness and caring and good for responsiveness.  

The report highlights a number of areas of concern including:

The service had been previously inspected in April 2016 when it was rated as requires improvement and inspectors noted some improvement had been made to recruitment checks and to the environment but there were still areas where significant improvement was required.

While inspectors could see that risk assessments for fire safety at both the practice main location (Wilmslow Road) and the branch location in Sale had been made they also saw that no action had been taken to address other key risks

CQC received information that access to a named GP and continuity of care was not always available. In addition the complaints procedure did not reflect recognised guidance and there was no evidence that learning from verbal complaints had been shared with staff.

Alison Holbourn, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice for the North, said:

“It is important that the people who are registered with the Wilmslow Road Surgery can rely on getting the high quality care. It is a matter of concern that the practice was going backwards having previously been rated as requires improvement."

“There had been some improvements to the general environment but more was needed. In addition, risk assessments in respect of fire safety and Legionella had not been acted upon. We have asked the service to take action to improve the practice environment."

“The GP partners were the practice owners and clinical care providers and following our last inspection they had brought in a consultancy agency to support the practice. However, it was not clear that the partners were always implementing and acting on the advice of the agency. We also found that the website for practice was out of date, we have asked for it to be updated."

“Due to the concerns identified during the inspection, CQC has placed this service into special measures. It will be inspected again within six months if they are still operating. The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to urgent enforcement action and if there is not enough improvement we will move to close the service.”

To get to the heart of people’s experiences of care, we always ask the following five questions of services.
