The Coombe House, Reading, Berkshire has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following a recent inspection.

Inspectors rated the service Outstanding for being responsive to people’s needs and well-led and Good for being safe, effective and caring. The overall rating was Outstanding.

The Coombe House is a care home which provides accommodation for older people who require assistance with personal care. There were 22 people using the service at the time of the inspection.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector, Adult Social Care, said;

“The Coombe House is a service that is committed to promoting a positive, inclusive and open culture. The values and vision of the service have been adopted by the staff who are committed to supporting the residents to live as independently as possible whilst providing care and support in a kind, compassionate manner.

“The service was rated Good overall after our previous inspection in December 2015 and I am delighted that the provision of compassionate, high quality, individualised care has continued to improve. I would like to congratulate the staff and management on attaining our highest overall rating of Outstanding”.

Some of the key findings from the inspection included:

  • People were provided with support and care in a sensitive and compassionate way, by a committed and consistently caring staff team. People and their relatives told inspectors:
    • "Staff are wonderful, they are very, very kind"
    • "They really do look after us all well – it's like living in a hotel and being cared for by family"
  • Staff continued to meet people's diverse physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The service had a strong culture of recognising equality and diversity amongst the people who resided at the home and the staff who worked at the service. The service was committed to meeting people's specific needs, for example, religious attendance and family occasions
  • The registered manager and staff team were exceptionally responsive in meeting people's changing and complex needs. For example one person's mental health began to deteriorate whilst living at the service. Whilst the home did not specialise in this area, they ensured mental health professionals were contacted and care plans amended in order to meet the person's needs. Staff also received additional training and the he service continued to provide care to the person, supporting them to retain as much independence as possible
  • The registered manager created an exceptionally open culture and had developed extremely positive values within the service which benefited people and their relatives. The registered manager ensured that the philosophy of peace, privacy and independence was achieved for all people
