The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by Cheveley Park Medical Centre, Durham to be Outstanding following an inspection carried out in January 2019.

Inspectors rated the practice, Outstanding for effectiveness and caring and Good for safety, responsiveness and well led.  A full report of the inspection has been published at: www.cqc.org.uk/location/1-541290385

Under CQC’s programme of inspections, all England’s GP practices are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

The report highlights a number of areas of outstanding practice including:

  • The practice had a very proactive approach to encouraging parents to take their children for their childhood immunisations; which resulted in a 100% uptake rate
  • There were highly effective arrangements in place to support those patients with dementia, which were recognised by credible external bodies
  • Leaders were keen to inspire the next generation of primary care clinicians. One of the GP partners taught nurses and healthcare assistants at a local university. The practice had a long history of teaching and training GPs
  • “The practice had identified that 169 of their patients were carers, this equated to approximately 4%of the patient population. Leaders were aware of the barriers and problems young carers faced. They had developed comprehensive systems to support young carers and had been awarded an accreditation from the local authority for this work.

Beverley Cole, Head of General Practice - North

“It was encouraging to note that feedback from patients was consistently positive and was higher than local and national averages.

“The practice was able to demonstrate that staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles. The continuing development of the staff’s skills, competence and knowledge was recognised as being integral to ensuring high-quality care. Staff were proactively supported and encouraged to acquire new skills, use their transferable skills, and share best practice.

“I was particularly impressed with the way staff treated patients. They treated them with kindness, respect and compassion and this was clearly reflected in patient feedback

“Following their last inspection in October 2015, Cheveley Park Medical Centre has improved its rating from Good to Outstanding. I congratulate them on this achievement.
