During an inspection looking at part of the service

This inspection was an announced focused inspection carried out on 3 May 2017. The purpose of the inspection was to confirm that the service provider, Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust had carried out their plan to meet the legal requirements in relation to the breaches in regulations that we identified in our previous joint inspection with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) between 20 and 23 June 2016 and in the Requirement Notice that we issued on the 14 December 2016. This report covers our findings in relation to those requirements.

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection alongside Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP). The Care Quality Commission and HMIP routinely coordinate inspections of prisons and healthcare providers.

We looked at what healthcare facilities were provided for patients and we found that the overall presentation of the healthcare unit was good. It was clean, bright, airy and spacious with 6 consulting rooms, a treatment area and 2 GP consulting rooms. We saw that doors to consulting rooms were kept shut when patients were receiving treatment to ensure their privacy.

We found that patients had access to a good range of information that informed them of what health care service were available at HMP Risley.

Patients told us: 'Healthcare is safe.' Another patient said of the healthcare services: 'Really good, I was dealt with respectfully.'

Patients we spoke with told us they had been happy with the care they received when they first came to HMP Risley. One patient described their initial health screen as being 'thorough'.

We found that patients' needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan.

We found patients at HMP Risley accessed treatment and support from one or more service providers who operated from within the prison, including GP services, a range of medical services, mental health services and drug and alcohol services.

We found that patients were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.
