During a routine inspection

We found that the unit understood consent and gave young people as many choices as was appropriate to their treatment plan.

We saw that the young people were well cared for and treated with respect. Young people and their families told us that they were treated with respect.

We found that the service worked with many other professionals to ensure that young people were able to integrate back into their usual lifestyles and communities as soon as they were well enough.

We found that the unit kept young people safe from any type of abuse. Young people said they felt 'safe and protected' and a family member told us that they were 'certain there is no abuse and the unit is safe on all levels'.

Young people, generally, had their own bedrooms and access to suitable bathing and toileting facilities. There was one shared room which young people agreed to share, if necessary. One young person said, 'the unit is so much more homely than I imagined'.

We found that there were a large number of properly and specifically trained staff to meet the young people's individual and specialist needs.

We found that the unit had a variety of ways of looking at the care they offered so that they could make sure they maintained and improved the quality of care and treatment they offered. They, generally, listened to the views of the young people who stayed in the unit, their parents and carers

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This review was carried out to check that the trust had made improvements relating to internal policies, procedures and practices that were in place at the time of our last review of the trust in March 2011.

We visited the trust's headquarters to assess the improvements and did not, on this occasion, speak with patients as part of the review so cannot report what they said.
