During a routine inspection

We conducted an inspection over two days of the Community Health Services and Mental Healthcare for Older Person Directorate. We looked at a range of community health services from care provided in people's own homes, to care provided on an inpatient basis at East Ham Care Centre including the long term continuing care wards.

People we spoke with told us they felt respected by staff. One person told us "They do respect my privacy. I wouldn't cooperate otherwise." We found that staff took steps to protect the privacy of people. For example keeping doors closed when giving care and treatment.

Staff we spoke with were positive about the multi-disciplinary nature of the service. This allowed staff easy access to other health professionals to address patients' care and treatment in a timely way. One staff member told us 'there is good communication between staff.'

People we spoke with in the day hospital had no concerns about the staff levels. Patients in the wound care clinic told us they did not have to wait long to be seen. One person receiving care in their home told us 'I have the same matron who visits me.' Another person said 'They say they are going to be here when they say they will.'

There were appropriate arrangements in place for the trust to monitor and assess the quality of the service. Where risks were identified we found evidence the trust's management conducted audits and reviews to make improvements to the service. We found records were kept securely and could be located promptly when needed.
