How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we have gathered about The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 12 November 2012 and observed how people were being cared for. We checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care, talked with people who use the service, talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

Staff were able, from time to time, to obtain further relevant qualifications. Every year a national survey is conducted of the views of staff in the NHS. The 2011 survey was conducted between September and December 2011. The trust was better than the national average for the number of staff feeling there are good opportunities to develop their potential at work. When we spoke with staff, most felt they had good access to relevant training. They told us they felt their managers were supportive and none reported any bullying to us.

When we spoke to a manager in Outpatients they told us all new staff have a three day UCLH induction then they are supported by a colleague in their department. When we spoke to staff in the department they told us they felt well supported and had good access to training.

When we visited the High Dependency Unit staff told us they had good access to training, including specific neurology courses and study days in addition to unit based education and training. For junior nurses appointed to Neuro-critical Care there is bedside training and supervision in the management of the agitated patient. All the nurses we spoke with in the Intensive Care Units had completed either a neuro course or intensive care course.

The provider has maintained high standards of care by creating an environment where clinical excellence could do well. On Lady Anne Allerton ward staff told us they thought the morale on the ward was now good. The ward manager told us that all the mandatory training for staff was up to date and that training in conflict resolution has been booked for all the staff. Each member of staff on the ward was assigned a mentor to support them. Previously, there had not been team meetings, but these were in the process of being set up.

We were told that if a member of staff was identified as requiring development, for example in their communication skills, they would receive training and be mentored by other staff.
