During an inspection looking at part of the service

Patients spoke positively about the staff, saying 'they are lovely' and 'they have all been very obliging and helpful'. They told us that the staff were polite and that they treated them with dignity, although one person told us that they were irritated that 'everybody is called darling'. One person told us that they were not allowed to access their own medicine. They said 'I feel like I have had my freedom taken away from me - it makes you feel like an idiot'.

People said that they were given the support they needed with daily tasks such as washing, dressing, and eating and drinking. They said that if they used their call bells to summon assistance, staff always responded quickly.

Some people told us that they frequently became bored as there was nothing to do on the ward. They told us that they did not use the sitting room and dining room because there was seldom anybody there to provide company. We observed that most of the patients spent most of their day in bed or by their bed.

People told us that they felt safe on the ward and felt able to raise any concerns with the staff. However the people we spoke to said that they did not know the process for making a formal complaint. One person said 'there doesn't seem to be anybody in charge'. They said that if they had concerns they would speak to the doctor on the ward as they assumed that this was the most senior person.
