Our judgement

Suitable arrangements are in place and most staff have received the necessary training to keep people safe and were aware of safeguarding issues and action they should take. However some staff still need training.

Overall, we found that Sevenacres was meeting this essential standard but, to maintain this, we have suggested that some improvements are made.

User experience

We asked people about how they kept their personal property and possessions safe. People stated that they did have their own rooms however other people could enter these and gave examples of when personal items had gone missing. One person stated that they had reported these to the manager and police. This person and others stated that they keep valuables with them but did say that they were aware that they could request items to be locked in a safe in the reception.

People did not raise any concerns about their personal safety and all stated that they would report concerns if anything untoward occurred.

Other evidence

When the Mental Health Act Commissioners visited Sevenacres in the summer of 2010 they did not identify any concerns about safeguarding. We also spoke with the Isle of Wight safeguarding team who stated that there were no ongoing investigations or concerns about Sevenacres.

We asked staff about how they helped people keep their personal possessions safe. They stated that people are encouraged not to keep large amounts of money or valuables with them but to give this to a relative or have it locked in the safe. We saw on one ward that there were separate lockable facilities in the office for each person accessible by staff. These safe boxes contained items of value and things that may present a risk to the person that should only be used by the person under supervision.

We spoke to staff about safeguarding and safeguarding training. Staff understood safeguarding and were aware of the action they should take if they had safeguarding concerns. Staff training records showed that most staff have completed safeguarding training. Staff working in all areas, including those where they may accommodate children and adolescents under the age of 18 years, have access to stage 1 child protection training however not all have completed this at the time of this review. Safeguarding is included in the trusts induction training for all new staff. Most, but not all, staff have also completed other relevant training in managing challenging behaviours such that people should not be placed at risk during interventions.

The Isle of Wight NHS PCT does not have facilities to accommodate children and adolescents with mental health needs. Should there be a need to accommodate a younger person on a temporary basis until it is safe to move them to a mainland specialist children’s unit this would be done at Sevenacres. We looked at the arrangements and facilities that would be used should this occur. These facilities are separate to those that would be used for adults and has its own entrance, WC and shower and would have separate staff to support the young person. These arrangements should ensure that younger people are safe. We were informed that the same facilities had been used for other vulnerable groups such as those with a learning disability in need of accommodation and treatment.
