During an inspection looking at part of the service

A pharmacist inspector from the Care Quality Commission visited the home. This was in order to look at medicine management. There were 42 people living in the service at this inspection visit. We looked at the medicine administration records for 15 people and how the service stored and managed medicines.

A member of staff told us, ‘’I have seen improvements in medicines over the last four weeks. Accidents and near misses are put in place. It is much more structured and organised. It is much better for the residents’’

A visiting healthcare professional told us, ‘’There are definite improvements with medicines’’.

We found that improvements had been made to ensure that medicines were managed safely.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with five people who were using the service who told us they felt that staff treated them with dignity and respect. One person said, “The staff are so nice, they are polite and really seem to care about us.” Another person told us, “They are very caring and considerate, they try their best.”

We spoke with five people who were using the service to ask if they were happy with the care and support they received. One person said, “If I need some support then I will receive it, although I will have to wait. The staff are very busy.” We saw that people's care plans had not been recently reviewed and did not always contain sufficient information.

We looked at the medicine administration records for 15 people living in the home. We looked at the storage of medicines in three medicine trolleys and in two medicine storage rooms. We found appropriate arrangements were not in place to manage the risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines.

We spoke with two people who were using the service who told us they felt there were not enough staff to meet people’s needs. One person said, “The staff are always very busy, I don’t think there are enough.” Another person told us, “My impression is that the staff are very nice but they’re too busy to spend any time with you. They always seem to be rushing about.”
