During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our previous inspection we had found that essential standards were not being met with respect to the management of medicines. During this inspection we checked that actions had been taken to address this.

We found that suitable arrangements were now in place for the management of prescribed medicines. Staff were following the procedures for the recording of medicines and guidance was available for the use of "as required" medicines.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two out of seven people who used the service for personal care, in one case through the intermediary of their care worker as they could not speak with us directly on the phone. We also spoke with three family members who were closely involved with their relatives' care. They were happy that people were involved and participated in their needs assessments and care planning. They said care and support were delivered according to agreed plans by competent staff. One relative said, 'We go with Request because it is high quality'. They told us staff were respectful towards the people using the service and their property. One person described their care workers as 'very supportive'. Another said they found the service 'really good'.

Two family members described problems they had experienced and raised with the service provided. They acknowledged their concerns had been dealt with by the manager, but their satisfaction with the service had been affected.

We found systems were in place to ensure people could participate in the assessment and planning of their care. Care plans were detailed and based on thorough assessments of people's needs. Care and support were delivered according to the agreed plans. Appropriate checks were made before staff started work, and processes were in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service. We found there were processes to ensure medicines were administered safely but they were not always followed.
