During a routine inspection

This inspection visit was announced at short notice to ensure office staff were available at the agency's registered office. At the time of our visit the agency provided support with personal care to seven adults who lived in their own homes. We spoke with one person and two family members by telephone after our visit to the agency office. One person told us, "They look after me very well." A family member said, "They are wonderful, very kind".

We looked at the care files of three people using the service. We found that individual needs were established when people were first referred to the service and were regularly reviewed. Support plans were continually evolving to respond flexibly to changes in peoples' needs.

Effective recruitment procedures were in place to ensure staff had undergone the relevant checks before commencing their employment

The staff members we spoke with told us that before they joined the agency they were given sufficient information and training to be confident they were able to meet the particular needs of the person they were supporting.

We saw that staff training was up to date and that a system of regular supervision sessions and annual appraisals was in place.

The provider had a system in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service they provided.

During a routine inspection

This was the first inspection of Benvarden Homecare Services. The service is newly registered and the provider told us they were providing personal care support to two people at the moment. Two care staff were employed to provide this support. The inspection visit was announced to ensure that the provider was available in the office.

During this inspection we held telephone interviews with the advocate for a person who uses the service. We also spoke with the provider, the manager of the service and a care worker.

People that we spoke with said that they and their relatives were involved in agreeing and planning their care.

People told us they were 'very happy' with the service provided. They told us staff listened and involved them in making decisions about their support. Comments included: 'I am very grateful, things work very well,' and 'I have not had any problems.'

People told us they felt safe using the service and with the staff that visit them. They said they had no concerns about the service. One person commented, 'They come on time, which gives me peace of mind.'
