During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited Warminster Private Dental Clinic in June 2013 and found improvements were needed to infection prevention and control facilities and procedures. We found the extraction of air and heat was not effectively managed in the decontamination room. Some sinks did not meet technical requirements. Floors in all but one clinic room were not fitted to the correct standard. Some areas were dusty and the domestic cleaning regime did not follow Department of Health guidelines for dental practices.

The practice sent us an action plan which outlined what it would do to improve infection control. The action plan covered all our areas of concern and we were told improvements would be made within an acceptable time frame. We went back to the practice in October 2013 to check on these improvements having been told they would be completed.

We found the improvements described by the practice had been made to a good standard. The decontamination room now had ventilation to deal with excessive temperatures. Flooring had been replaced and wear and tear to paintwork repaired. Sinks in clinical rooms now met technical requirements. The domestic cleaning regime was now driven by a schedule of tasks to be completed.

During a routine inspection

Everyone we spoke with at the dental practice said they were happy with the care and treatment they received. One said of the care: "it's fabulous, particularly with my little girl. She has no fear of coming and is actually excited about it." All those people we spoke with said they would recommend the practice to others. One person said: "I would not go anywhere else." Two people we spoke with now lived in other parts of the country, but travelled back to Warminster specifically for dental treatment.

People said they could usually get appointments to suit them, including for urgent treatment. There were arrangements for people to get help when the practice was closed. The dentists and hygienist talked to people about their general health and made sure the practice had all the relevant information before treating someone. All staff knew how to act in the event of a medical emergency and the practice had all the required emergency equipment.

The dentists and hygienist took time to explain the risks and benefits of any treatment. People were given written treatment plans including the potential costs of proposed treatment. People made up their own mind about how to progress and could withdraw consent at any time.

The practice and equipment was generally clean, but a number of the requirements of the code of practice for the prevention and control of infection for dental practices were not in place. This related mostly to the suitability of ventilation, some fixtures and fittings, and the general cleaning programme.
