During a routine inspection

We spoke with people using the service but they were not always able to tell us their views about their care. We relied upon our observations of care, speaking with staff and looking at records to help us understand people's experiences.

We found people were supported to meet their nutrition and hydration needs. A varied diet was provided and meal supplements were used where one person was at risk of weight loss. Staff joined people using the service at meal times and made these social occasions.

People’s medication was managed safely. We found staff had attended training and their competency was assessed before they handled medicines. Medicines were stored securely and accurate records were kept of medication administration and disposal.

We found there were effective recruitment procedures at the home. Appropriate checks were undertaken before staff began work, such as screening for criminal convictions and obtaining references. Staff had not started work until all required checks and clearances had been received. This ensured people were cared for by staff who were suitable to work with vulnerable adults.

During a routine inspection

There was good regard for people's privacy and dignity. People's wishes and preferences were taken into account. This meant their care was provided in a personalised and sensitive way. One person told us staff respected their cultural needs and supported them with these. They said they liked living at the home.

Care plans were in place outlining individual care needs and how to support people. Risk assessments had been written to help reduce the likelihood of injury or harm. People were supported to attend healthcare appointments. We noted some attention was needed to make sure people were weighed regularly, particularly a person at risk of losing weight.

The premises were warm, comfortable and well maintained. Each person had their own room which was decorated and arranged how they liked it. One person told us they chose their décor, which reflected their favourite colours. Equipment had been provided to assist people with disabilities. There was access throughout the building for people who use wheelchairs.

Staff were properly inducted and attended regular training. They described supportive management and a good sense of team work. The staff we spoke with were knowledgeable about people's individual requirements and how best to support them.

There was a statement of purpose in place, containing all required information. This information is useful to people looking for care services, to help them decide if it can meet their needs.
