During a routine inspection

When we visited The Grove the atmosphere was calm, relaxed and friendly. The four people who lived there were unable to talk to us as they had little verbal communication skills so we spent time observing their morning routine. We observed the staff and the people communicated effectively with each other. The staff showed they understood what each person wanted. We saw that staff knew the four people well and were able to support their needs and behaviour in a positive way.

We spoke with the registered manager, deputy and two members of staff on duty. They showed us people's care and support plans and told us how they supported people to live active lives. Each person had their likes, dislikes, individual behaviours and risks documented in their care plans. The staff told us how these were used to support each person to participate in the community and visit with family.

The staff we spoke told us that the people who lived at The Grove have had 'personalities which shone through'. They said the staff team they worked with gave them a great deal of help when they needed it and the manager was very supportive.

We saw people's care plans gave detailed information about each person and these set out clearly how staff could best support their needs. All the information we looked at was up to date and staff had signed to say they had read and understood the detail.

The four members of staff we spoke to all demonstrated they were experience and understood the needs of the four people who lived at The Grange. They demonstrated to us that they understood their responsibilities and how to ensure the people were kept safe and well supported. We saw that everyone was treated with dignity and respect.

During a routine inspection

Due to the complex needs of the people who lived at The Grove we were unable to speak with them to establish their views and experiences about the service that they received. We therefore spent time observing routines and interactions. We spoke with all four staff who were working at the home on the day of our visit and with the registered manager. We reviewed the care and support plans of two people and additional information as detailed within this report.

People were supported to live very active lives. People took part in a range of leisure and social activities, both at home and in the local community. The level of support people required varied and this was accommodated by the home.

People's likes, dislikes, preferences and goals were considered in relation to the care and support people received. Everyone was treated with dignity and respect.

People were involved in developing independent living skills with staff support and encouragement. Staff met people's care and support needs in ways that they preferred and we saw that detailed records gave staff the information that they required to do this. Plans were in place to support people to enjoy their lives and staff were aware of risks, people's rights and their responsibilities in order to enable them to do this.

People were supported by a knowledgeable and well trained staff team who knew their care and support needs well. Staff were offered a range of training opportunities that were specifically designed to meet the needs of the people that they supported.

People were protected because staff were confident to recognise and report abuse. The home had implemented changes in response to incidents to keep people safe.

The home effectively ensured that people's views were considered and listened to in relation to the running of the service. Staff responded to verbal and non verbal communication methods to identify and respond to people's requests. The organisation had comprehensive quality monitoring tools to ensure that they maintained good quality and safe care.
