We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 5 December 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

People we spoke to told us staff provided care which was of a high standard. A relative of a person living at the home told us the care was "wonderful" and the staff had been "excellent" and she felt she could "come and go" as she pleased. Another relative told us the home was a "home from home" for his daughter and "couldn't be better".

There were arrangements in place to support staff.These included training and supervision. We looked at the training matrix which showed the training undertaken by staff and showed when training was due. The training was up to date.

Staff told us they felt supported by their manager and they had sufficient training to do their job. One member of staff told us she felt the staff worked as a cohesive team. Another member of staff told us she saw the people living at the home as an extended family.

Staff told us they had supervised work sessions with their manager every eight weeks. Training and supervision records we viewed supported this. We also saw the schedule for annual appraisals which showed some staff had already received their appraisal and the dates staff were scheduled to have their meeting.
