All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We visited the ambulance base and offices of NSL Wolverhampton. We met and spoke with the manager, two office staff, and five members of the patient transport staff. We also met with the Patient Transport Services (PTS) Manager at the local NHS hospital who arranged the service for people.

We spoke with eight people on the telephone. Everyone we spoke with gave us positive feedback about their experiences.

One person told us, 'I have never had a bad crew. The staff are professional, I feel safe with them'. Another person told us, 'The staff are friendly and helpful. They make sure that I am back in my home safely'.

We looked at two vehicles and found that they were clean, maintained and ready to use. We saw that systems were in place for the cleaning and maintenance of vehicles which ensured people's safety.

We found that recruitment procedures had not always been robust. This placed people that used the service at risk of harm.

Staff had not received all the training and support needed to ensure that they maintained the required skills and knowledge to meet people's needs and keep them safe.

The provider had systems in place to monitor the service but these had not always been effective.

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people who used this service. We were able to talk with people who used the service. We also spoke with members of staff and with the Patient ServicesTransport Manager at the local hospital who arranged the service for people.

We saw the ambulances were fully equipped to carry out their transport functions. There were arrangements in place to check that they were clean and hygienic. The provider also made sure the ambulances were insured, checked, serviced and roadworthy.

We looked at the systems in place to make sure that staff were recruited safely. We found that people were not placed at risk and the provider took reasonable steps to prevent unsuitable people from working in the service.
