During a routine inspection

Event EMS is designed to provide first aid cover for organised sporting activities such as horse-riding events. Therefore people are seen if they sustain an injury or have an accident whilst at the event. The first aid service is run on a weekend and throughout the rest of a week the partners have other work commitments. We discussed with the provider that under the revision of registration requirements first aid services being provided to cover sporting events, concerts and fetes no longer need to be registered with the Care Quality Commission. However Event EMS had found that the tenders they bid for required them to be registered with us and without this registration they could not continue to operate.

When we visited the registered manager was the only person available. The office is based in his house and staff kept the vehicles at their own homes. We were unable to speak with people who used the service, as no local events were scheduled and it could not be expected that people would always need Event EMS staff to see them.

We reviewed the records the service kept in respect of the care being provided; staff and equipment and found all was well-maintained. The manager had ensured that vehicles were maintained in line with guidance associated with the operation of ambulances and all staff followed appropriate cleaning schedules. He also made sure that the vehicles were stocked with all the equipment their paramedics would need.
