During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spoke to relatives of two people and observed interactions between staff and people living at the home.

Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. We spoke with two members of staff who told us that they always asked people's permission before they provided care. They explained they had a detailed knowledge of how people communicated and were therefore able to understand if the person was consenting.

We contacted two relatives who were both very positive about the care and support provided by the service. One relative told us 'Staff are exceptional people ' they really care for (my relative) as a human being' They also explained that they were very grateful because the care provided gave them 'peace of mind.'

During our visit, we spoke with two members of staff and they could all recall attending annual training in safeguarding vulnerable adults and demonstrated a good understanding of what this meant.

During our inspection we reviewed files in relation to two members of staff. We saw that each person had been required to submit references, proof of identification and an application form with a full employment history.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spoke to relatives of two people and observed interactions between staff and people living at the home.

People who used the service were treated with privacy and dignity. On arrival one woman was still getting dressed. The door to her bedroom was closed and she was being helped by a female support worker to get ready.

People experienced care which met their needs. We spoke with two relatives. One relative told us 'They understand (my daughter) very well, I am very happy with the level of care.' Another parent told us 'I am very satisfied with the way they are looking after our daughter ' when we see her, she's always happy.'

Medicines were kept safely in a locked cabinet which was clearly labelled. Controlled drugs (these are prescribed medicines which may be misused) were kept in a separate labelled cabinet.

Staff were able to obtain further relevant qualifications. They had the opportunity to sign up to do a vocational qualification in health and social care. At the time of our visit four members of staff had applied to do this.

People who use the service and their representatives were asked for their views about their care. We spoke to a parent who told us she was in regular contact with the service.
