People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, reviewed information sent to us by other organisations, carried out a visit on 3 December 2012 and observed how people were being cared for. We checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care, talked with people who use the service, talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

We looked at recruitment information in four staff files. All of the files we looked at contained recent photographs of staff and pre-employment checks including references and health declarations. We saw that each file contained an application form and records from staff interviews.

We found that 11 of the 25 care staff at the home have achieved a National Vocational Qualification in Health and Social Care at level two or above. Staff we spoke with told us "I find this work very rewarding” and “there is lots of training and it is very good”.

People we spoke with told us "staff are very nice". Relatives we spoke with told us "staff are very good, they do a good job".
