During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out a responsive review of this home following information that the service intended to close in January 2014. The purpose of this visit was to ensure that the forthcoming closure was managed appropriately and that people living in the home were supported to find suitable alternative accommodation.

During this visit we spoke with people living in the home, some of their family members and the care staff. People living in the home and their relatives were very complimentary about the quality of the care provided by the care staff. Comments included:

"The care is phenomenal, there is no home in Tameside to match. The carer's are totally concerned about the resident's here. It's such a caring and loving atmosphere. For our relative it's about the care and they certainly get it from the staff here. All the staff are caring, the care staff, the cooks, the domestics."

During this visit we found that people were being supported appropriately to manage their future care and support arrangements and they had access to the relevant professionals for assessments of care needs.

We saw that people continued to receive care which was relevant to their needs. People living in the home and their relatives told us that the care remained 'exceptionally' good and that care staff remained kind, caring and attentive.

The relevant staffing levels had been agreed with the contracts and commissioning unit and we were informed these would remain in place until closure.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with sixteen people living at Jonathan Grange Nursing Home in a group in the lounge area. All of the people that expressed a view were very satisfied about they way they received care and support from the staff. They told us that staff were very caring and commented particularly on the activities co-ordinator. We offered people the opportunity to meet with us in private but no-one took up this offer.

One person who used the service told us: "Whatever I've wanted; they've done it for me". Another said: "I've tried two [homes] before and this is the best one so far". A third person said: "I couldn't possibly complain. I'm quite comfortable".

One visitor told us that they were very happy with the quality of care stating that the varied and meaningful activities were 'keeping [my friend] mentally alert".

We found that the home was meeting the essential standards we looked at on this visit. We found that people were well cared for. We saw that the home continued to have creative, supportive and innovative approaches to engaging people in the programme of activities the home offered.
