During an inspection in response to concerns

We visited the surgery after receiving information of concern about the treatment provided, laboratory results, inappropriate use of medicines and doctors not having appropriate registration and not having the required insurance.

We looked at five patient records and found the medicines prescribed and treatments provided were appropriate. Medicines were suitably stored and prescriptions we saw were appropriate to treat conditions patients were diagnosed with.

Staff recruitment records showed appropriate checks were made before staff started work and there was evidence of indemnity insurance for 16 of the 17 doctors and dentists employed. After our visit the provider wrote to us and told us that they would not use one doctor until they had the required insurance documentation.

The complaints procedure was displayed at the surgery and available to patients on the provider's website. Records seen showed complaints were responded to appropriately.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

On this occasion, we did not speak with people using the service as part of our inspection.

We found people using the service experienced care that met their needs and were cared for by skilled and experienced staff. However, we were unable to assess the impact of formal staff supervision meetings and clinical staff appraisals as they had not been completed at the time of our inspection. There was evidence that quality monitoring audits had taken place on a regular basis, and that learning from the audits was taking place and necessary changes had been implemented.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

On this occasion, we did not speak with people using the service as part of our inspection.

The provider had undertaken all outstanding staff recruitment checks including: satisfactory criminal records disclosures, written references and professional indemnity cover. Most checks had been completed satisfactorily; however three out of the 15 staff criminal records disclosure applications that had been made were in progress at the time of our inspection.

6 June 2013

During a routine inspection

All people we spoke with told us that they were satisfied with the level and quality of services being provided by doctors and reception staff. They told us that the doctors listened to them and talked through the various treatment options. One person told us that the doctors were 'professional and very good'. Another person said that they were 'happy' with the services they had received.

We found that people had given their consent before they had received any care or treatment. People's health care needs were assessed, treatment plans developed and delivered in line with their individual care plan. Medicines were kept securely and supplied appropriately. However, the provider had not completed all appropriate checks for most of the staff before they began work and some staff had not received all mandatory training. All the staff had not received supervision and annual appraisals in accordance with the surgery's policy and procedure. Regular quality audits had not taken place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people using the service and others.

During a routine inspection

Patients who use the service were given appropriate information and support regarding their care or treatment. Patients told us that the doctors listened to them and talked through the various treatment options. They said that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that they were comfortable with. One patient said they are 'really good doctor' another patient said 'consultation was very good, I am peaceful now'.
