During a routine inspection

We inspected St Giles Care Agency as part of our scheduled inspection plan. The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and staff did not know we were visiting.

In the office we met and spoke with the chief executive, the clinical and business development manager and the human resource manager. On the telephone we spoke with five carers and one person that used the service. We also spoke with five relatives of people that used the service.

During the inspection we looked at five people's care plans and we saw that the care records were in order. People we spoke with told us they had seen their care plan and saw staff updating it.

We reviewed the staffing levels and mandatory training. We saw that the agency was suitably staffed with appropriately trained, competent staff. One person we spoke with told us: 'The staff are excellent. I wish I could have the same person all the time but I know I can't. I really can't fault them. They make sure I am comfortable before they leave. I look forward to them coming in'. We looked at how medication administration was supported by the staff and how staff competencies were checked. We saw that this process was well managed by the agency.

We reviewed the service's complaints procedure and the logged complaints. There were no current complaints being dealt with at the time of the inspection. The people we spoke with that used the service told us that they would recommend the agency to others.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who received a service from this agency over the telephone. We asked them about their experiences of the support they received. Everyone we spoke with spoke highly of the service they received from St Giles Agency and could not praise them enough. One person told us, 'I won't have a bad word said about St. Giles'. Another person said, 'I am very happy, I can't fault them at all. They (Care staff) are absolutely marvellous'. A further person commented, 'They are more than my carers, they are like family'.

All five people told us they were happy with the support they received and that it made a difference to their everyday living. People told us that they were treated with respect and that care staff maintained their privacy and dignity. For example one person told us that care staff always closed the curtains if necessary. Another person told us that care staff always closed the door when tending to their relatives needs.

This was our first inspection visit to the agency since they were registered with us. We spoke with the care agency manager, the clinical lead and two care staff when we visited the agency office. All were very accommodating and positive during our visit. They told us about how the agency had developed and the improvements that they had noted as being needed through monitoring the service. A quality report and thank you cards we read showed that people had been positive about the services they had received.
